What's the healthiest ice cream flavor?

  • Your Answer:
  • Correct Answer:

Surprise! Strawberry ice cream has slightly fewer calories and less fat than vanilla ice cream or chocolate. And because it's usually made with a little fruit, you also get a little vitamin C, too.

No matter what flavor, ice cream isn't something you should eat a lot of or every day. When you do eat it, one scoop is a healthy serving.  One scoop should look  about the same size as half a baseball.

Eating one sundae can be like eating an entire meal.

  • Your Answer:
  • Correct Answer:

Sundaes may make you smile, but they can be way too much! Eating a medium-sized sundae made with French vanilla ice cream, chocolate chips, cookie dough, fudge, and caramel in a waffle bowl is the same as three quarter-pound burgers. Whoa -- that's too much!

Be healthy. Stick to one scoop, and stay away from gooey, candy, sticky, sugary toppings. Choose fresh fruit. It has vitamins and fiber, which are good for you. Or try chopped nuts; they have protein and healthy fats.

A chocolate milkshake is healthier than a bowl of chocolate ice cream.

A chocolate milkshake is healthier than a bowl of chocolate ice cream.

  • Your Answer:
  • Correct Answer:

A chocolate milkshake does have milk in it, but it has too much sugar -- more than ice cream!  A 10-ounce milkshake has twice the sugar of a cup of ice cream.

For a milkshake that is better for you, try making a milkshake at home. Use  low-sugar ice cream and low-fat milk. Pour it into an 8-ounce drinking glass for a smaller, healthier portion size. That way you won't be drinking so much sugar.

All ice cream cones are the same.

All ice cream cones are the same.

  • Your Answer:
  • Correct Answer:

Waffle, sugar, or cake -- some cones can be better for you than others. A lot depends on size -- smaller is usually better. But the healthiest way to eat your ice cream is out of a cup! It won't give you extra calories or fat. Cones can be worse for you than your frozen treat. A waffle cone can have 160 calories, the same as a cup of no-sugar-added, nonfat frozen yogurt. When you order, ask for just one scoop in a cup.

You can eat tons of ice pops because they are fat-free.

You can eat tons of ice pops because they are fat-free.

  • Your Answer:
  • Correct Answer:

Like some juice drinks, fruit-flavored ices may not have any fruit in them! But ice pops and fruit bars can have tons of sugar. When you want an icy treat, look for something made with real fruit and no added sugar. Compare boxes. Read the ingredients and the nutrition labels, then pick the kind with the least sugar and fewest calories.

Bonus: Ice pops usually come as a single serving -- a healthy portion. Enjoy just one!

RESULTS: Great job! You know your ice cream and how to make healthy choices. Enjoy your frozen treats!

RESULTS: Not bad. The next time you reach for a frozen treat, remember that you have the power to choose something that tastes good and is healthy, too. Be sure to read labels or ask for the nutrition facts. That will help you make the best pick.

RESULTS: Whoa! Looks like you could use some practice picking frozen treats. You may want to take this quiz again, so you can remember what to check on nutrition labels and how to pick the right-size treat. When you make healthy choices, it's OK to have ice cream, frozen yogurt, or ice pops -- once in a while.
